Mark Casey Milestone

About the Artist

Mark Casey Milestone is a self-taught artist who identifies as a symbolist. Throughout his career, he has been classified as a folk artist, an outsider artist, and a visionary artist.

Mark with The Weaver and The MeasurerInspired by the mythological, the spriritual, the mystical, and the whimsical, Mark intends for his work to begin stories that the viewer gets to complete on their own.

Here, we see Mark in his studio in 2015, working on the second in his three part series, "The Three Fates". In progress here is 'The Weaver', with 'The Measurer' leaning against the wall in the back. Rather than the usual unattractive, witch-like images imposed on The Three Fates by many illustrators, writers, and artists, Mark's Measurer, Weaver, and Cutter are presented as beautiful, fairy-like, powerful women.

Artist's Statement

“My artwork represents what I have done since I was a small child — making things. Mark and Robots in the YardThat has always allowed me to be happy, even during a childhood that I know now was a bit spotty.

When I was about five, I remember helping my grandfather rake freshly mowed grass. He gave me a nickel for my efforts. I was allowed to walk to the country store, about a block away, to buy candy. On my way home, I was so happy with my little bag of candy and with how blue the sky was and how the grass was light green. Painted Window PaneLife seemed mysterious and beautiful. I don't know quite how to describe it, but it is as if the Earth and sky dropped down inside my soul. I noted how totally happy I was, and thought to myself how important it was to remember this particular time for the rest of my life. I think that I came home a slightly different person from when I left.

About a year later, we moved into a house which I immediately explored. In the basement, I found an old paint-by-number set. It was the deluxe set! With a whole flock of ducks! Mark at Urban Artware 1995The surface was warped and moldy. I found a piece of plywood about my height. With the brushes and oils from the paint set, I painted my first life-sized farmer. I remember he was barefoot. All my farmers were barefoot with the green grass growing over their feet.

Finishing Moon and Comet #2I remember the brushes being fairly small; my painting was fairly large. It took me a long time. But I remember each day, waking up and being excited about how much I had done on my painting the day before. It was very much like the feeling I had walking home with my little bag of candy.

I really do think that art chose me. I did not choose art.

By the time I was twelve, I was already very serious about being an artist. Salem_s FlightSo, as a young adult, I was lucky that I didn't have to ever worry about what I was going to do as a profession. I recognize the value of art that raises political and social consciousness. It is important and viable. But, for me and (I hope) the viewer, my work makes you feel like you just bought a little bag of candy.”
